FM SYNTHESIS: 59 YEARS AND COMPOSING MUSIC FROM THE INSIDE-OUT
Speaker: Prof. John Chowning
Professor of Music Emeritus, Stanford University / Founder of CCRMA / 2026 GRAMMY Technical Award Recipient[cite: 9]
◆ Abstract

Since its groundbreaking emergence, Frequency Modulation (FM) synthesis has profoundly transformed electronic sound design and contemporary computer music. In this keynote lecture, Prof. John Chowning,  the father of FM synthesis and honored with the 2026 GRAMMY Technical Award, reflects upon the 59-year evolutionary trajectory of FM sound generation. He will delve into the creative paradigm of composing music "from the inside-out," examining the deconstruction and synthesis of internal acoustic timbres, and illuminating how scientific breakthroughs lead to enduring sonic expression.
